Biography

Brazilian singer and songwriter primarily known for upbeat, funky music. Following the death of her father in the mid-1990s, however, Lima recorded "Tug on the Line," a melancholy album that reflected on her personal loss. As well, the album was written to provide solace to the many Brazilians who are dying of AIDS.

Although born in Brazil, Lima spent most of her childhood in Washington, D.C. where she first began playing the guitar because music helped to ease her loneliness. When she was 12, her family moved back to Rio de Janeiro, and once again she felt isolated and alone because the customs of her homeland were completely foreign to her. In her late teens, she returned to the U.S., planning to study to be a conductor. Her teacher, however, saw her talent as a singer, and soon Lima was on her way back to Brazil. She apprenticed as a graphic artist and back-up singer for a while, then cut her first demo and signed a recording contract. Her first solo album, "Simples Como Fogo," was released in 1979. Although Lima reportedly is satisfied to be "famous" only in Brazil, she sings all of her songs in English as a reminder of her time in the U.S. She rarely performs live, claiming she prefers the musical control that a studio provides, and says she is a total perfectionist.
