French actor, who, after an adventurous youth, was a favourite actor of director Marcel Carné from 1950.

He played many supporting roles, repeatedly with a number of renowned directors (Carné, Sacha Guitry, Alfred Hitchcock, Jean-Pierre Melville, Henri Decoin, et al). He was less present on screen in the 1970s.

He had a romantic relationship with Carné, although he himself qualified their relationship as one of "homosensualité" rather than homosexuality. He published his autobiography under the title "Mataf" (Pygmalion, 1991). He was married to actress Yoko Tani, then to actress Tania Busselier.

He died in Paris, France on 3 February 2009.
