Italian poet, scholar, and philosopher whose outstanding scholarly and philosophical works and superb lyric poetry place him among the great writers of the 19th century.
At the age of 16 he independently had mastered Greek, Latin, and several modern languages, had translated many classical works, and had written two tragedies, many Italian poems, and several scholarly commentaries. Excessive study permanently damaged his health: after bouts of poor vision, he eventually became blind in one eye and developed a cerebrospinal condition that afflicted him all his life.
Leopardi created a remarkable and renowned poetic work, related to the Romantic era.
He died during the cholera epidemic on 14 June 1837, Naples.
Sy Scholfield quotes "Giacomo Leopardi: Leben, Orte, Werke" by Sebastian Neumeister (Macchiaroli, 1992), p. 104: "Im Geburtenregister der Gemeinde Santa Maria di Monte Morello in Recanati kann man noch heute lesen: «Die 30 junii, 1798 - Iacobus Talde- gardus Franciscus Sales Xaverius Petrus, natus heri hora 19 ex cive Monaldo quondam Jacobi Leopardi et Adelaide... legitimis coniugibus ex hac civitate et parochia, baptizatus fuit de licentia a reverendo patre Aloysio Leopardi ex oratorio Divi Philippi. ... Graf Monaldo hat die Geburt seines Erstgebornen später folgendermassen berichtet: «Mein geliebter Giacomo wurde am 29. Juni 1798 drei Stunden nach Mittag geboren = Er wurde am nächsten Tag getauft..."
Translation: In the birth register of the municipality of Santa Maria di Monte Morello in Recanati can still be read [in Latin]: '30 June 1798, Francisus Sales Xaverius Petrus was born yesterday at 19:00 o'clock to the citizen Monaldo James Leopardi and Adelaide ... Legitimate spouses from this city and parish, and was baptized by the reverend Father Louis leopardi.' ... Count Monaldo later reported the birth as follows: 'My beloved Giacomo was born on 29 June 1798 three hours after midday. He was baptized the next day.'
On 7 December 2014, Sy Scholfield forwarded a copy of the birth certificate found online and confirming the above info: http://images.corrieredelmezzogiorno.corriereobjects.it/campania/fotogallery/campania/2012/01/biblioteca_leopardiana/img_biblioteca_leopardiana/Certificato_di_nascita_leopardi_672-458_resize.jpg
The father gives 3pm which is a different time to that on the birth record but (as Grazia Bordoni pointed out) 3pm equalled 19 hours after sunset (8pm).
Previously this data had 7:15pm quoting Thomas Ring for "shortly before sunset."
