Biography
American law, repealing the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Act passed under President Clinton. The Don't Ask, Don't Tell act affected the military, prohibiting discrimination against gay and lesbian soldiers so long as their sexual preferences were not known. The repeal act allows soldiers to reveal their sexuality without fear of recrimination.
On July 22, 2011 in the Oval Office, President Obama formally certified by his signature "at about 3:30 PM" (Barry McKenna quotes NY Times for this information) that the military is ready to enact the law . The law takes effect on September 20, 2011.
Source Notes
Barry McKenna sends a link to the official White House Press release of the transcript. The President signed just moments before 9:35 AM.
