Biography
American pop singer and businesswoman, former member of the girl group called Destiny's Child, formed when Knowles was eight. The group was signed to Decca Records in 1997. Knowles wrote and produced nearly every song on the group's CD, "Survivor" in 2001. That year, she won the ASCAP Pop Songwriter Of The Year Award, becoming the first African-American woman to do so.
The girls who had formed the group then began recording on their own, with Knowles' career continuing on the trajectory to super-star status. But the group did not officially break up until September 10, 2005.
Classically trained in voice, Knowles starred in the 2001 MTV adaptation of the opera Carmen (now labeled "A Hip Hopera"). In 2002, she played Foxxy Cleopatra in the Austin Powers' film "Goldmember" and her acting career was born.
Knowles is a good businesswoman as well, racking up product endorsements and a clothing line in 2004.
On April 4, 2008, she wed rapper Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) in his Manhattan penthouse.
