Biography
Afghan President, the first popularly elected president in the country's modern history. Karzai was sworn in on December 7, 2004 despite some charges of election fraud on the election day of October 9, 2004 in which he won 55% of the vote. He had been appointed interim leader in December 2001 after the Taliban regime fell on November. US officials, including Vice President Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld attended his swearing-in held in Kabul amidst tight security. Karzai has survived previous assassination attempts..
Karzai obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in political science and international relations from Shimla University in India. That same year, 1982, he joined the resistance against the Soviets, serving as director of operations for southwest Afghanistan in the Afghan National Liberation Front. In 1985, he completed journalism courses in Lille, France and became the director of information for the Liberation Front. At first supporting the Taliban, he became deputy foreign minister of Afghanistan in 1992 and, three years later, 1995, he denounced the movement. The Taliban assassinated Karzai's father in Pakistan in 2000. He is married to Dr. Zenat Karzai, a physician, and he is fluent in several languages, including English, Urdu, Pashto, Dari and French.
