Biography
American entrepreneur, chairman of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Inc, a publishing-industry giant. He built Harcourt from an $8 million company to a $1.3 billion enterprise during his 36 years as chairman. The company's authors include Alice Walker, Umberto Eco and Mark Helprin. Jovanovich was succeeded by former U.S. Energy secretary John S. Herrington upon his resignation on 5/29/1990. On December 4, 2001, he died at home in San Diego, CA, age 81.
