Biography
Chinese politician, President of the People's Republic, 1998. Jiang Zemin's wooden public persona and his unprepossessing awkwardness may be his strongest assets. His unimpressive exterior masks a skillful politician and technocrat who has climbed the Byzantine passages of China's power structure to emerge as its chief leader, confounding detractors and supporters alike.
Jiang's personality was forged via books not bloodshed, unlike his predecessors Deng Xiaoping and Mao Zedong, who fought in the communist revolution. Born in 1926, Jiang studied electrical engineering in Shanghai, where he developed a taste for Benny Goodman, English films and the Communist Party.
