Biography

Canadian-American film director, producer, actor and founder of the Canadian Film Centre. Among his body of work as a director, are the notable films, "In the Heat of the Night" (1967), "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968), "Fiddler on the Roof "(1971), "Jesus Christ Superstar" (1973), and "Moonstruck (1987)."

On December 14, 1981 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. Ten years later, November 1, 1991, he was again honored when made a Companion of the Order of Canada.

He married Margaret Ann Dixon on July 11, 1953; they had three children. The couple remained married until Dixon's death on November 26, 2004.
