Biography
Italian socialist and broadcaster. Raised in a Sicilian Mafia ambiance, he gravitated toward Tano Badalementi. As a youth, he rebelled against his dad and Badalementi and began to take a public position against the Mafia, first in the free press and then on radio. On 9/19/1977, his dad died in a mysterious accident and then Peppino was killed on 5/09/1978. For many years his death was passed off as a suicide until 2001, when a tribunal recognized that they were dealing with a Mafia crime.
Director Marco Tullio Giordana made a film based on Peppino's life, "The Hundred Steps," starring actor Luigi Lo Cascio, and it was nominated for an Oscar in 2002.
