Christiaan Huygens

Biography

Dutch mathematician and natural philosopher. He is known particularly as an astronomer, physicist, probabilist and horologist.

Huygens was a leading natural philosopher of his time. His work included early telescopic studies of the rings of Saturn and the discovery of its moon Titan, the invention of the pendulum clock and other investigations in timekeeping. He published major studies of mechanics and optics, and a pioneer work on games of chance.

He died in The Hague on 8 July 1695.

Sy Scholfield quotes a transcription of his father's records in Cornelis Dirk Andriesse's book, "Huygens: The Man Behind the Principle" (Cambridge University Press, 2005), p. 34: "Christiann, our second child, was born in 1629 on 14 April, the Saturday before easter, in the night, at two o'clock exactly, the beginning of the aforementioned day."
