Biography
American politician, he was elected to the US Senate in 1973 and held his seat until 1985. After serving in the Army during WWII, he became head of radio stations in his home state of Kentucky. In 1964 he ran for election to the state senate and won the race. During his tenure he was elected majority leader. A Democrat from Kentucky, he made his first bid for the US Senate in 1972 and took office in January 1973.
He married in 1947; his wife died in 2004.
