Biography
British politician, leader of the Conservative Party beginning in November 2003. A lawyer from 1964, he was made Queens Counsel in 1982. He was elected to Parliament in 1983. The following year he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Solicitor General. Two years later, 1985, 1985 he took the post of Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Trade and Industry.
In 1993, after serving as Minister of State in environmental affairs and Secretary of State for employment, Howard became Home Secretary, a post he held for four years.
From 1997 to 1999, he served as Shadow Foreign Secretary. In September 2001, he was appointed Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.
