Biography
Dutch Mayor's wife of Oosterbeek, a village close to the river Rhine near Arnhem. While her husband was away and unable to get back, one of the last and biggest attacks on the Germans by Allied forces took place. They bombed the wrong bridge, the famed "bridge too far" and many of the Allied forces were injured. Alone in her war-damaged home with her six kids, she nursed the wounded allied soldiers in every room of the house. Utilizing the hall, kitchen, bedrooms and all living areas, she bandaged the wounded with every scrap of cloth and buried the dead in the garden. The soldiers gave her the name "Angel of Arnhem." A movie of her life and deeds was portrayed with Liv Ullman "A Bridge Too Far," released in 1977.
Ter Horst died 2/21/1992 when hit by a speeding car while on an evening stroll.
