Biography

Considered to be the beginning of World War II, this was the first military engagement of the war. German bombs rained down on Danzig. Forty-tive minutes later, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened on the Polish fortress and 62 German divisions and 1300 aircraft pummeled Poland. A few hours later, at 8 AM, Poland requested immediate military assistance from France and Britain. Britan declared war on Germany at noon on September 3 and France declared war at 5:00 PM, when Hitler ignored demands to end the blitzkrieg .

Source Notes

Marcello Borges quotes news and historic sources. BBC confirms the time as the beginning of the bombing and in addition says that at 4:45 AM the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Polish garrison of the Westerplatte Fort, Danzig
