Biography
American oil well known as the Spindletop Gusher credited with being the origin of the 20th-century petroleum industry in the United States leading directly to our "car culture," highways and urbane mobility.
A ceremony was held at Beaumont, Texas to celebrate the 100th anniversary on 1/11/2001. Ex-president Bush the elder was one of the speakers, along with many other major figures from the oil industry and big business that it spawned. Before the time of Spindletop, a good well produced a few hundred gallons a day. When the gusher broke through at 10:32 am on 10 Jan. 1901, the men working on the rig ran for their lives and were lucky not to be killed or seriously injured -- but luck is the signature of this event.
The well produces from 75,000 to 100,000 gallons per day, and is still producing after a hundred years. This gusher led to further investment in the Beaumont
area, and was the start of the oil boom in Texas.
