Biography
American event, the first flight of a privately built space craft that rocketed to an altitude of more than 62.5 miles, the internationally recognized boundary of space. Pilot Mike Melvill landed at Mojave Airport at about 8:15 AM PDT , saying he had "a hell of a view from 62 miles." He added, "The colors were pretty staggering from up there. Looking from the Earth up there, you know, it's almost a religious experience. It's an awesome thing to see. You can see the curvature of the Earth. I could see all the way out, way out past the islands off the coast of Los Angeles."
The flight is considered to be the prelude to future space flights available to the general public.

PT quotes CNN.com: "The rocket plane lifted off at about 6:45 AM, PDT, carried by the jet White Knight for an hour-long ascent. At 7:35 AM it reached 33,000 feet and the jet's pilot reported all systems checked out for SpaceShipOne's launch. It received clearance to land and 'go for light'--the signal to begin launch countdown--11 minutes later. At 7:51 AM [PDT] Melvill ignited the rocket engines and piloted SpaceShipOne into the blackness of space." (from CNN.com article posted 6/21/2004 at 5:04 PM EDT by Michael Coren of CNN)
