Biography
British ship named in its official launch ceremony after the original ship Queen Mary launched in 1936. The ship was built in France and billed as the greatest passenger liner to date. It is the largest, longest, tallest, widest and, at $800 million, the most expensive passenger liner ever built. On November 15, 2003, the gangway leading to the ship collapsed and 15 people died with reports of 10 more injured. The accident occurred at 2:30 PM at the Chantiers d l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. Most of the victims were children who were standing on the gangway when it collapsed.
Queen Mary 2 officially became the new flagship of the Cunard fleet on Monday December 22, 2003 in a ceremony at the Alston Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire. It arrived in Southampton on Boxing Day, December 26, 2003.
Queen Elizabeth II presided over the historic launch, and, on January 12, 2004, at 6:30 PM GMT the ocean liner set sail from Southampton on its maiden voyage to Ft. Lauderdale, Fl, arriving on January 26, 2004..
