Biography
British ship, a member of the Cunard line, christened and launched on June 7, 1906. The ship made its maiden voyage to NY, leaving the shipyard at ; she arrived on September 7, 1907, arriving a week later, on the 13th. After many transatlantic voyages, in 1914, the ship was retrofitted for war and carried passengers and arms on its reduced voyage schedule. On May 1, 1915, having completed its 201st transatlantic voyage, the ship left New York, and was torpedoed at about 2:05 PM off Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland on Friday, May 7, 1915. Within 19 minutes, she sank. Out of 1962 passengers, 1,201 men, women and children perished in the disaster. Included in the dead were three Germans who had been found on the ship, illegally, who had been imprisoned by the ship's captain. .
