Biography
German battleship launched and christened by Dorothea von Loewenfeld, granddaughter of the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, for whom the ship was named. The famed German battleship was commissioned on August 24, 1940.
On the morning of May, 24, 1941, while west of Iceland, the ship and its accompanying vessels encountered the British battle cruiser Hood and battleship Prince of Wales. The Hood was sunk and the Bismarck sustained heavy damage. Later that day, while the Bismarck tried to sail to France for repairs, the ship was hit by planes and surface ships as well as a torpedo which so damaged the stem that steering became virtually impossible. The Bismarck was intercepted by British battleships and heavy cruisers on the morning of May 27, 1941. After less than two hours of battle, the Bismarck capsized and sank. Of 2300 crew members, only 110-115 survived.
