Biography
Historic event; the disembarkation of sea-borne allied troops in Normandy, France. The invasion marked the beginning of the beating back of German forces during World War II. and took an amazing coordinated effort between the Allied Forces, air, sea and land. General Eisenhower coordinated the largest force in history. The bloody battles fought at this time on the beaches of Normandy gave the Allied Forces the boost they needed in order to begin beating back the Germans eastward, across France and into Germany itself. By nightfall this day, the Allies had significant holds on all five landing areas invaded. The beaches were code-named Gold, Juno, Omaha, Utah, and Sword, with Omaha being the bloodiest of the battles where the Germans, under Rommel, provided the most resistance.
