Biography

Russian nuclear power plant closes down, 14 years after its historic explosion. The switch was flipped for the last time at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It closed at 1:16pm today, Dec 15th (time in Washington Post on line, Dec 15th).

Ukraine president Leonid Kuchma gave the shutdown order from Kiev over a video linkup with the plant, located some 85 miles away, and Chernobyl shift chief Oleksandr Yelchishchev turned the black switch. The shutdown, which followed years of intense international pressure, should erase the danger of future accidents at the plant.

Source Notes

LMR quotes news the ff day. EET is correct since USSR's breakdown. Before 1990 Moscow's and Kiev's timezones were the same (GMT+3). Since then, there is 1 hour less in Ukraina (GMT+2) than in Russia (GMT+3).
