Biography

Norwegian championship ice skater of all time with awards of over 257 medals, cups and bowls. She won Gold Medals in the Olympics of 1928, 1932, and 1935 and turned professional in 1936 in the Ice Carnivals. Henie has appeared in 13 movies.

Together with her husband, shipping magnate and art patron Niels Onstad, she founded the Henie Onstad Art Centre at Høvikodden in Bærum, with avant-garde and abstract art. The centre, designed by Norwegian architects Jon Eikvar and Sven Erik Engebretsen, also contains Sonja Henie's award collection.

Henie died of leukemia on 12 October 1969 aged 57 while on a plane from Paris, going home to Oslo, Norway.
