Biography
American champion skater with his sister Beth, winning international titles by the time they were in their teens. He soared to fame at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY with a record-setting five Gold Medals for speed skating.
The son of an orthopedic surgeon, he had his first pair of skates when he was two and was obsessed with skating as a kid. Quiet, modest and low-key, he shunned advertising offers after his Olympic success. For the following seven years he took up bike racing, becoming a pro and winning the 1985 U.S. Championship. The following year he competed in the Tour de France.
In 1991, Heiden became a surgical resident at the University of California-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, starting a grueling 70-hour a week program. He set his sights on being a sports doctor in Northern California. In 1992 he bought a three-bedroom house in the woodsy Bay Area where his girl friend, Karen Drews, took up residence.
