Biography
American politician who was a Congressman in 1865, Governor of Ohio in 1867 and President of the U.S. from 1877 to 1881. A lawyer and soldier, he was decorated for bravery after being wounded in 1862.
Hayes attended Harvard Law School and passed the bar in 1845. He opened a practice in Cincinnati that was successful. On 12/30/1852, he married Lucy Ware Webb and they had seven sons and one daughter.
He served as a Major in the Ohio Volunteers in 1861, promoted to Colonel the following year and Brigadier-General in 1984. After leaving the military, Hayes entered politics and was elected Governor of Ohio in 1867 to 1877.
His presidential election was disputed. On 11/07/1876, the Democratic candidate, Samuel J. Tilden was declared the elected President on the face of the returns. The following day, Republicans claimed the election for Hayes. It was the new year before an Electoral Commission was appointed and Hayes declared President - by a single vote!
He was widowed on 6/25/1889, and died of heart disease on 1/17/1893, Fremont, OH.

Pat Davis quotes William DeGregorio, "The Complete Book of U.S. Presidents," which reports that Hayes was born posthumously about 9:30 PM of 10/04/1822 in a west room of the family home on Williams Street in Delaware, OH. The original information was given by his uncle Sardis Birchard many years later when Hayes became president . . . . from his memory of it being in the evening, possibly 9:00 to 10:00 PM LMT (AFA, 11/1964, rectified to 9:18 PM LMT.
