Biography

American newsfigure as the final contestant on a game show, "Survivor." The big hit of CBS during the summer of 2000, Survivor set 16 participants on a South Seas Island to live off the land and vote off the island, one by one, their castmates. The machinations involved alignments and strategies that were duck-soup to the corporate trainer Hatch, though he ended up with not only competition but rancor among his fellow survivors.

Richard was the oldest of four kids of parents who divorced when he was 11. He had a stint at West Point but dropped out to finish school at civilian universities. Once up to 360 lbs, Richard trimmed down to 250 lbs before the island adventure and during the time when their diet was little more than rice - and rats - lost another 50. Indifferent to clothes, he gained the title of "the naked fat guy."

Though gay, Richard is paternal and has an adopted nine-year-old son. He's still looking for "Mr. Right," and as a celebrity with money, a new car, and public exposure, is getting fan mail that includes proposals. He is doing dozens of TV interviews, hosting a radio talk show, appearing on magazine covers and pitching his newly released book. In January 2005 he was charged with tax evasion in Rhode Island. He allegedly failed to report earnings, including his $1 million winnings from the show. He is expected to plead guilty in exchange for a reduced sentence. He subsequently backed out of the court agreement and faces a federal grand jury in Providence, RI.

On September 8, 2005 he was indicted in Providence, RI for failing to pay taxes.
