Biography

German Commander of the Sixteenth Army Corp and Commander in Chief of all Panzer troops.

From his early military work in Communications, he directed battles by field radio and developed the armored corp. for mechanized warfare. He made Major-General in 1936, Lt-General in 1938 and full Commander in 1939. A master strategist, with drive and decisiveness, he was the author of "Achtung: Panzer."

He had a major falling out of favor with Hitler, when he hesitated in the Russian offensive, and was dismissed 12/41. Three months later he was recalled, but he saw the cause as hopeless. By early 1945 he argued for an armistice, and was dismissed 3/31/1945. With the Allied victory, he was captured 5/10/1945. Six years later he published his "Memoirs." He died May 14, 1954 at Schwangau bei Fussen in Germany, age 65.
