Biography

American baseball player: pitcher with the Mets for most of his career. Drafted in 1982, 1984 was his record-breaking rookie year. That year he played in the All-Stars, the youngest player to date to do so. He won the Cy Young award in 1985.

Despite a glorious start, his career went downhill and his personal life has been uneasy. He has battled drugs and alcohol. In 1987 he was beaten by police and subsequently entered rehabilitation. That year his performance was better but he missed games because of his treatment.

In September 1994 he was suspended for the rest of that season and the next. Feeling unable to battle his demons, he contemplated suicide. He retired from professional baseball in 2000. Once again, in March 2005 his personal life made the news when he was charged with domestic violence. On August 22, 2005, he was stopped by police on suspicion of drunk driving and allegedly fled the scene. Police apprehended him and he spent the night in jail. He entered a drug-and-alcohol treatment center on August 30, 2005.
