American swimmer who broke two world records, won two 1976 Olympic medals and two 1979 Pan-American Games gold medals, nine National Championships and nine National Collegiate Athletic Association titles.
He swam from the time he was six. At 22, he turned his attention to his studies as a geography and economics major, planning to broaden life outside the focus of swimming.
