Biography
French financier and politician, the President of France 5/19/1974 succeeding Georges Pompidou. He served with the French Resistance during Nazi occupation during WW II and began his government career specializing in finance, 1952. Wealthy, aristocratic, intellectual, he skis, hunts, plays football and flies his own plane. Married; four kids.
Retired from politics, in 1997 he set his goal at building a volcano in the middle of France, a theme-park that would take $71 million (at last count) of the taxpayer's money, setting his plans for construction in the year 2000. Backers say the project is a masterstroke of tourism and popular science and will attract a half million people annually to the depressed Auvergne region, and critics say it is a nutty idea and an eyesore that is overrated and overpriced. Construction was launched in August 1997 but ground to a halt with bureaucratic red tape.
