Biography
American Jurist, named to the Supreme Court by President Clinton 6/15/1993. A former attorney, she is a gender equality advocate.
Her dad, Nathan, owned a small clothing store. Her mom, Celia Bader, died of cancer when Ruth was 17. She married Martin Ginsburg in June 1954; two kids.
After being misdiagnosed with acute diverticulitis, she underwent surgery for colon cancer on 9/17/1999 in Washington, DC.
In March 2004, criticism was leveled at the Supreme Court Justice because of her connections to the National Organization for Women (NOW), an advocacy group for liberal issues. Ginsburg has lent her name and presence to a lecture series given by NOW’s Legal Defense and Education Fund. She introduced the series on January 29, 2004 just two weeks after she voted in favor of the position held in a friend-of-the-court brief by NOW's legal defense fund. Ethicists hold that she should disqualify herself from any cases involving NOW that are heard by the Supreme Court or sever her ties to the organization.
