Biography

American actor, a handsome matinee idol of the '20s who rose from a silent screen extra to the superstar of his day. Gilbert broke into films through family connections in 1916, starting as an extra and bit player. One of his first roles as leading man was in "Heart o' the Hills" in 1919 with Mary Pickford. By the mid-20's he was classified as a great screen idol, appearing in a total of over 95 films, achieving 3 Cameo's. The start of "talkies" began the decline of Gilbert's career as his voice did not translate well in the new medium. He also lost money in the crash of '29.

Gilbert made four marriages and had a passionate affair with Greta Garbo, which whom he played in "Flesh and the Devil." The decline of his popularity led to heavy drinking, which no doubt hastened his death of a heart attack at age 41, on 1/09/1936.
