Biography
American pro athlete, a Hall of Fame baseball pitcher, who joined the St. Louis Cardinals in 1957. Although he played with the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team for a short while, baseball became his career. He was known for his fastball and slider pitches and competitive spirit. After a stellar 1968 season he was named the National Leage Most Valuable Player. Of the nine World Series games he started, he won seven. In 1964 and 1967 he was named World Series Most Valuable Player. He retired from baseball in 1975 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1981.
