Biography
American Roman Catholic priest who aroused a hornet's nest of distress that began in January 2002, a symbol of the troubled priesthood. Accused of sexual abuse from as early as 1972, Geoghan was moved from parish to parish while the church denied the problem posed by him and others, discretely settling claims and sending it's pedophile priests on retreat before reassignment.
Removed from the parish ministry in 1994, Geoghan was defrocked by Pope John Paul II on 6/06/1998. Since 1995, more than 130 people have claimed that he fondled or raped them during the three decades he served in Boston area parishes. On 1/18/2002, he was found guilty of sexual assault against a ten-year-old boy a decade ago and he faces two other criminal cases and 84 civil lawsuits accusing him of the sexual abuse of children.
Boston has some 700 priests, among whom at least 80 have been exposed as pedophiles, preying on young boys. The expose has reflected poorly on Cardinal Bernard Law of Boston who has attempted to reach forgiveness by releasing the names of those perpetrators whose punishment has for decades been turned over to God's forgiveness, a church policy for centuries.
