American creator of a board game, "Magic, the Gathering," which swept the U.S. and Europe in the '90s to where hobby and game stores could not keep up to the demand. Wizards of the Coast was a fledgling Seattle game-making company of 12 employees when it first put Magic in the stores, August 1993. It sold out in six weeks and its popularity spread like wildfire. Within two years the company increased to 200 employees with offices in Scotland and Belgium.
Garfield was teaching math at a Washington college when he teamed up with the Wizards company to produce his game. The game uses images of medieval and mythological themes and is played with game cards; the object is to drive opponents away from the land of Dominia. There are some 900 cards which become collectibles, worth money and trades.
The year of birth was changed to 1963 in June 2010. Original entry gave 1967 as the birth year with the following source notes: Selma Schepel quotes a mutual friend who obtained the data from his mother 5/1995. However, in June 2010 an Astro.com reader pointed out that most sources, including Wikipedia, give 1963 as the birth year. Rodden's original notes give 1967 and there is no way to completely reconcile this discrepancy. However, US Public Records vol. 1 listed in Ancestry.com give 6/26/1963 as the birthdate for a Richard C. Garfield on Hamilton Street, Philadelphia.
