Biography

Austrian psychiatrist, known as the father of psychoanalysis. He treated patients with hypnosis but ultimately rejected this method in favor of listening to the patients talk. He introduced several methods used today in psychoanalysis such as "free association" and working with repression. Freud proved that getting at repressed memories, whether real or imagined, was the key to unlocking the unconscious. It is to him that we owe phrases that have been incorporated into the language, such as the Freudian slip, the Oedipus Complex and the concept of the Ego, as well as the use of the psychiatrist's couch which he introduced in 1890. The analyst's couch is the most identifiable symbol of psychoanalysis. He wrote many books on psychoanalysis and psychiatry. His best work is said to be "The Interpretation of Dreams." His collected works comprise 23 volumes.

Freud's father was a Jewish wool merchant who was 41 when his son was born, twice as old as his mother. She had two sons from a previous marriage and Freud was the eldest of eight kids that followed. In 1859 the family moved to Vienna, Austria where Freud remained for the most part of his life. He was always the first in his class at school. After graduation, he pursued a medical degree in Vienna. As he entered practice, he began to find more fulfillment working in the laboratory on physiological studies rather than treating patients. He was determined to make an important contribution to the world of science.

In 1882, he met, fell in love and became engaged to one of his sister's friends, Martha Bernays. They married in September 1886, five months after he had opened a private practice as a psychiatrist. They had six children, Mathilde, Martin, Oliver, Ernst, Sophie and Anna, the youngest, who went on to become a prominent psychoanalyst in her own right.

Freud established psychoanalysis as an independent branch of science. He proved that psychological factors not just physical, could be the cause of mental imbalance or emotional disturbances.

In 1907, Freud befriended Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, who was 20 years his junior. They began corresponding in agreement and endorsement, but later Jung went on to form theories on his own which conflicted with those of Freud's. This resulted in an argument in 1909 which destroyed their friendship and was never to be resolved.

In the spring of 1923, Freud was diagnosed with cancer of the palate, due to his lifelong habit of smoking cigars. He underwent 33 operations as a result, including the removal of half of his jaw. He, Martha and Anna fled to London in 1938 when German troops entered Vienna. His health was deteriorating rapidly, and on 9/23/1939, upon his request, a friend administered a lethal dose of morphine, ending his life.

Despite personal and financial hardships and sometimes acrimonious fallings out with colleagues, Freud's life was incredibly successful, and his ideas have entered our collective consciousness.

(Note that the town in which he was born was part of the Austrian- Hungarian Empire at the time of his birth. Freud spoke and wrote in German.)

Philip Lucas quotes a photo of his father's diary in which the data was written in Hebrew and German. Ernest Jones gives the same data in "The Life and Works of Sigmund Freud," 1953, p.1.

(Sabian Symbols No.359 had 9:00 AM. An article in the AA newsletter, 9/1995, by Helen Best reported, "Jay Harris, MD and Jean Harris, Ph.D. state in their book that Freud was not born on May 6, 1856 but two months earlier on March 6, 1856. Why? Conceived out of wedlock, the records were falsified by his parents. The book is "The One Eyed Doctor Sigmund Freud, Psychological Origins of Freud's Works," published by Jason Aronson, New York & London 1984."

Richard Tarnas, Ph.D. writes on 2/24/1996, "Scholars and biographers who have examined the data have overwhelmingly decided in favor of the May 6 date. A highly acclaimed authoritative 1988 biography by Yale University's sterling Professor of History, Peter Gay, sums up the situation in an endnote on p.656, "People ... have been misled by an illegible entry of a local clerk and some have tried to foist an earlier date, March 6, on him.")

In the Astrological Journal, July-Aug/2000, Mike Harding writes a thorough review:

"Freud's father, Jakob, had been married twice before he married Freud's mother on 29th July 1855.... (recorded), Freud's birth was registered on 6th May 1856 which was entered on May 13th of that year. If young Sigismund (or Schlomo, as he was named) really was conceived prior to the wedding night, and born on March 6th, then an amazing network of deceit must underlie what would be, essentially, a faked document. The facts have been gathered in Marianne Krull's authoritative "Freud and his Father," (Hutchinson 1987).

"At the time of Freud's birth Jakob and Amalie Freud lived in one room above a blacksmith's shop in the Jewish quarter of Frieburg at 117 Schlossergasse. The other rooms were occupied by the blacksmith and his family. Several relatives lived within minutes' walk and the whole area was a close-knit Jewish stetl. One wonders how a baby can be concealed from everyone for two months, including the blacksmith and his wife across the hall.

"Freud's birth data and time are recorded in Jakob's bible, along with the date and time of his own father, after whom Freud was named..... It is hard to imagine that Jokob made a mistake, or lied. Also entered - and this is of great significance - is the date of Freud's circumcision (13th May) together with four named rabbis and assistants at the ceremony. All of them would have been party to the conspiracy or fail to tell the difference between a 7-day-old baby and one of two months.

"A copy of Freud's birth certificate is available via the internet on the A.A. Bril website at http://lcweb.loc.gov/exhibits/freud/vc008101.jpg, clearly showing the date at 6th May, written in perfect German copperplate."
