Biography

American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) and its crew. It later acquired the retronym of "Star Trek: The Original Series" ("Star Trek: TOS" or simply "TOS") to distinguish the show within the media franchise that it began.

The show is set in the Milky Way galaxy, roughly during the 2260s. The ship and crew are led by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), first officer and science officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and chief medical officer Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley). The crew includes Lieutenant Commander Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), who is chief engineer and second officer (i.e. third-in-command); communications officer Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols); helmsman Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu (George Takei); Ensign Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig), a navigator introduced in the show's second season; Nurse Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett, who also voiced the ship's computer); and the captain's yeoman Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney).

Perhaps the show's best-known character was Mr. Spock from the planet Vulcan; brilliant, analytical, methodical and unemotional; his pointed ears and arched eyebrows were his distinguishing physical marks.

"Star Trek" aired on NBC from 8 September 1966 to 3 June 1969. Several years later, the series became a bona fide hit in broadcast syndication, remaining so throughout the 1970s, achieving cult classic status and a developing influence on popular culture. Star Trek eventually spawned a franchise, consisting of five additional television series, twelve feature films, numerous books, games, toys, and is now widely considered one of the most popular and influential television series of all time.

Source Notes

Sy Scholfield quotes the TV program guide in The New York Times, 8 September 1966, p. 76. Same time of 8:30pm in the TV program in Los Angeles Times, 8 September 1966, p. D18. Star Trek's first broadcast on the NBC network at 8:30pm across the USA would have occurred earliest on the east coast.

Previously this entry had 7:30pm: Tracy Marks in MH 10/1978 quotes Leonard Nimoy, "I Am Not Spock," for the time that Star Trek began on TV. Scholfield checked the book which gives "Thursday, September 8, 1966, 7:30 P.M. EST" (no place given), but, actually, daylight savings time was in place across the USA. Nimoy is correct inasmuch as a time of 7:30pm EST is the same as 8:30pm EDT.

Scholfield notes that Star Trek was first broadcast on the CTV network in Canada on the evening of 6 September 1966, two days before the premiere in the USA, presumably first telecast at St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada's most easterly settlement, on the local affiliate of the CTV network.
