Biography
Italian royalty born in Switzerland, the son of Italy's last king, Umberto II and Princess Marina; grandson of Vittorio Emanuele III. Heir to Italy's throne, Emanuele is in exile and barred from stepping on Italian soil. An only child raised in Switzerland by his father, 64 and his Swiss-born mother, 66, he is waging an aggressive campaign to return, lobbying the European Court of Human Rights, the Vatican and the Italian Parliament. At the end of WW II, Italy abolished its 85-year monarchy.
Accustomed to a lifestyle of the privileged aristocracy, Prince Emanuele was educated in boarding school to become fluent in Italian, French and English. He cohosted an Italian TV show about soccer for three years and hopes to one day see Juventus play in Turin himself. The House of Savoy is not petitioning for a return of its property, but simply to be able to visit his own country as a citizen.
When not working as a banker in Geneva, he is familiar with private jets and island getaways where he may relax with his companion, Tatiana von Grecman Waldek, 26, a divorced mother of two.
In November 2002, a law went into effect overturning a 54-year-old constitutional ban on the presence of the last monarch's male heirs in Italy and the family made a festive Christmas visit to their homeland.
The Prince of Venice and Piedmont from the House of Savoy married French actress Clotilde Courau in Rome on September 25, 2003, at 17.49 MEDT. The bride was six months pregnant with their child. The marriage took place at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where the prince’s great grandparents were married more than a century before.
On December 3, he had a nasty spill while riding his motorbike and suffered a broken collarbone and other injuries. On December 28, 2003 in Geneva, he and his wife had a healthy daughter, Vittoria.
