German-born British sculptor and medallist. He studied and worked in Paris, Rome and Frankfurt am Main, and lived in London following the rise of the Nazis in 1933. His works included tombs, busts, medals and monuments. He was an exhibitor in International Exhibitions in Germany, France, Italy, and England; his works are in many museums in Europe. He married Hedwig Einstein, sister of Carl Einstein and a concert pianist in her own right. Together they had two children: Ursula and Wolf, both of whom emigrated to the United States. Benno Elkan died on 10 January 1960, London.

Sy Scholfield cites birth certificate quoted in "Der Bildhauer Benno Elkan" by Hans Menzel-Severing (Im Verlage des Historischen Vereins Dortmund: Im Buchhandel durch Fr. Wilh. Ruhfus, 1980), p. 9:
"zu Dortmund . . . am zweiten December des Jahres tausend achthundert siebenzig und sieben Nachmittags um einhalb fünf Uhr ein Kind männlichen Geschlechts geboren worden sei, welches den Vornamen „Benno" erhalten habe. Vorgelesen, genehmigt und unterschrieben: (gez.)"
[Abridged translation: At Dortmund. . . . on the second of December in the year eighteen hundred and seventy-seven at half before five o'clock in the afternoon was born a male child, named "Benno." Read, approved and signed: (signed)].
