Biography
French director of some 50 films from 1922; score of silents before sound pictures, mainly melodramas. In the sound era he did a string of small but successful films. He is best remembered for his films in the late '30s. A hard worker, never relaxed, he had a flair for drama and was able to solicit performances from powerful actors, but his camera work tended to be wild, with poor choices of technique. He later turned out contemporary and historic comedies and dramas, most enjoyable with Fernandel in "Don Camillo." He married Olga Nokhimoosky 12/14/1926.
Died 10/29/1967, Paris in an auto accident..
