Biography

French comparative philologist and scholar, a foundational figure in the field of Indo-European myth and religion, Georges Dumézil was a major influence on the advent of structuralism in French thought especially on Michel Foucault and Claude Lévi-Strauss. His work on societies and religions Indo-European , which is still the subject of in-depth studies and controversy , has opened new perspectives to many social scientists

Mastering some thirty languages and some cliam that he knew 200 languages fluently.

Dumezil was elected to the French Academy on 26 October 1978. He was awarded several honorary decorations.

He died 11 October 1986, Paris.
