Biography
Czech politician who joined the communist party in 1939. When a liberal policy led to the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Soviet Forces in August, 1968, he became President of the Federal Assembly but was expelled soon after. He disappeared from the public view and worked for years as a forestry official.
In September, 1988, he and his wife received permission to travel abroad for the first time since 1970, going to Italy where he was honored by the University of Bologna. After 21 years of political oblivion, he was unanimously elected Chairman of the National Parliament on 12/28/1989.
Dubcek was in a car accident on 9/01/1992 and died 11/07/1992, Prague, Czechoslovakia.
