Biography
Italian jockey, won the Prima Corsa (group) in 1986 and 1989. With great skill, he has an innovative style and mount that combines both American and European styles of riding; he won 96 races. He was the winner of the Arc de Triomphe in 1995 riding Lammtarra. This is the biggest race in Europe, held at Longchamp in Paris. The world's fastest thoroughbreds compete in the 2,400 meter classic distance (approx. 1 1/2 miles) This internationally renowned sporting event is the most highly prized competition for fans of flat racing.
On 6/01/2000, he survived a plane crash with just a broken ankle. A light aircraft carrying him and fellow jockey Ray Cochrane to a race meeting at Goodwood crashed outside Newmarket airfield, killing the plane's pilot.
