Biography
Italian ecclesiastic in the Roman Catholic religion. Cardinal Salvatore de Giorgi was ordained a priest on June 28, 1953 and served as diocesan chaplain for the Teachers' Movement of Catholic Action. He was appointed titular bishop of Tulana and auxiliary bishop of Oria on November 21, 1973. On April 4, 1981, he was made archbishop of Foggia, and on October 10, 1987, archbishop of Taranto. After resigning in 1990, he was the general president of Catholic Action until 1996, then served as President of the Sicilian Episcopal Conference.
He was created a cardinal on February 21, 1998, and continues to serve as Archbishop of Palermo. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation of the Clergy, the Council for the Laity, and the Council for the Family.
