Biography
American politician, Democratic Mayor of Chicago from 1955, one of the most powerful political insiders in the U.S., called "the last of the big-city bosses." Daley is forever linked with the riots that broke out at the 1968 Democratic National Convention when, as mayor, he declared war on the anti-war protestors and set the standard for how NOT to deal with protestors. His actions caused a firestorm of violence with army troops, national guardsman and the police force trying to beat into submission the anti-Vietnam protestors who had planned a peace march. When on the convention floor, Senator Ribicoff decried the "Gestao tactics" being used by the police, Daley shouted, "Shut up, you Jew bastard!"
He died of heart attack 12/20/1976 in his doctor's office, Chicago, IL
