Biography
French politician named by President Francois Mitterand as P.M. of France upon the resignation of Michel Rocard 5/15/1991, France's first woman P.M. A faithful Mitterand lieutenant for over two decades, she is a combative socialist. Her chief concern during her seven years in government was to keep French industry competitive. Formerly she was the Minister of Trade, Agriculture and European affairs.
Traditionally the President handles foreign and military affairs and the P.M. takes responsibility for domestic policy.
