Biography
Mexican-American actor who began his career in his native Mexico in the early '30s. Cordova gained some popularity with Paramount Pictures for his small but memorable role in "For Whom the Bell Tolls," and then starred in a few other features, the best of which was "Frenchman's Creek" in 1946. He played Latin-lover types in Hollywood films in the '40s. Returning to Mexico in the late 1940s, De Cordova continued to appear in Latin American films until his premature retirement in the early 1950s. On the whole, his Spanish-language roles were more rewarding than his Hollywood assignments, especially his feverish portrayal of an insane aristocrat in "El" in1951. He was better-known in South America and Spain.
