Biography
American politician, CA rep, elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred First Congress by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative Anthony L. Coelho, and reelected to the six succeeding Congresses (September 12, 1989 to January 3, 2003).
The son of a Baptist minister, Rev. Adrian Condit, and a homemaker, Gary, his sister and two brothers were raised on an Oklahoma dairy farm. He canned tomatoes and sold paint to pay his way through California State University, Stanislaus, winning his first political post in 1972 as Ceres city councilman. His younger brother, Darrell 49, has been in and out of jail since 1968, when he was arrested on drug sales when he was 16. He has since accumulated a rap sheet for everything from armed robbery and forgery to driving under the influence. The older brother, Burl 55, a police officer in Turlock, ran unsuccessfully for sheriff in 1986 and was demoted from lieutenant to sergeant in 1993 for secretly giving away a police dog he said he had destroyed. Further, he was caught improperly selling nine police guns.
Gary became mayor of the town, 1974-76, and has always been considered by the citizens of Ceres to be one of their own. From his first stint in Congress in 1989, he was known as a straight-shooter who worked hard for his constituents and whose "word is gold."
A non-drinker, Condit did his hell-raising with fast motorcycles and country music. He and his wife Carolyn married when they were 19, in 1967, and had a son, Chad (now 33) and daughter Cadee (now 25), both of whom now work for governor Gray Davis. Working in Washington, DC, Condit keeps a condo there but takes a flight most weekends to the place he considers home, Ceres. Carolyn has chronic headaches that keep her from a more active role in his public life.
In mid-2000, Condit met a pretty dark-curly-haired political intern, Chandra Levy, 23. When she mysteriously disappeared on 5/01/2001, attention turned to the Congressman, who openly spoke of their friendship and contributed $10,000 to the reward offered for information leading to her. Chandra had told friends that she was involved with a married man, a great secret, and suspicion fell on Condit. On 5/10/2001, he discreetly became incognito, avoiding reporters and not answering the Levy family's further questions. Finally, in early July, he admitted that they had been involved in an affair and that he had broken it off two days before Chandra disappeared. Susay Levy met with Gary Condit and their respective lawyers at the Jefferson Hotel, Washington,
D.C. on June 21 at 9:30 pm.
Condit continued to evade questions, even when he had a much publicized TV interview with Connie Chung on 8/23/01, snowballing a wall of criticism, even from his colleagues for "not being more forthcoming." On 8/27/01, his two kids, Chad and Cadee resigned from their employment with Governor Gray Davis after he spoke out against their father's evasive tactics.
Condit filed to run for reelection to Congress on 12/07/2001, Modesto, CA. He was soundly defeated on 6/05/2002 by his former friend and protégé, Assemblyman Dennis Cardoza, 42. Condit, hounded by relentless publicity about his affair with missing federal intern Chandra Levy (which he helped feed by consenting to a famously tight-lipped interview with ABC's Connie Chung), had insisted on campaigning for re-election even after Democratic leaders abandoned him. On 3/05/2002, he had a staggering defeat in the Dem. primary.
In March 2005 he settled a claim against the writer Dominick Dunne for an undisclosed amount of money and an apology. Dunne had implicated him in the disappearance and murder of Chandra Levy.
