Biography
European first human cloned birth, a healthy female born C-section as the mother had a prior child that way. The baby, named Eve, is a clone of her 31-year-old mother, over 7 lbs. Boisseleir also announced three more births are expected before the end of January through the Institute. The second is somewhere in Europe and the next two following that in Asia. The announcement was made from Hollywood, FL but the actual location was not given.
Brigette Boisseleir, head of the Clonaid Institute, represents a sect, the Raelians, that believes life on Earth was created by extraterrestrials, giving some pause to acceptance of the announcement.
Meantime, Congress is hastening efforts to ban human cloning. The United Nations passed a resolution in January 2002 banning human cloning for reproduction. A U.N. committee will meet in March 2003 to discuss ethical concerns surrounding cloning.
