Biography
U.S. city. Population 129,556 (1999) -5.9% 1990-1999. County seat of Chatham County.
Colonists arrived: Feb. 12, 1733 N.S.
Self-regulation act authorizing elections: Feb. 10, 1787
First election: March 5, 1787
Incorporation as a city: Dec. 23, 1789
An act for the self-regulation of the town of Savannah and "the Hamlets thereof" authorized elections of seven wardens who were empowered to make "bye-laws" and regulations was concurred with February 10, 1787 and the first election was held on March 5, 1787 (1787 January Session, Georgia Acts at pp. 46-49).
Incorporation as a city was concurred with by the Governor on December 23, 1789 in the same act that Augusta was incorporated as a town (1789 Georgia Acts at pp. 25-27).
On January 20, 1733 O.S. (January 31, 1733 N.S.) James Oglethorpe selected the site for the Colony of Georgia and on February 1, 1733 O.S. (February 12, 1733 N.S.) colonists arrived at the present site of Savannah (A History of Savannah and South Georgia by William Harden, 1981, p. 12).
